Facebook changed the look and feel of the main feed page in an attempt to compete with TikTok to retain users longer.

Meta Platforms just announced the company is changing the main feed of the Facebook app, prioritizing the "discovery" of new content over posts from the accounts users follow. This is an attempt to compete with the video app TikTok.

The feed will now be called "Home" and will be a place for users to "discover new content" that Facebook thinks they'll like, including photos and videos selected by Facebook's algorithm. The feed will show content based on user interests, from both accounts they follow and accounts they don't follow.

A new separate page called 'Feeds' will only show posts from friends, pages and groups that users actively choose to follow. These posts will show up in chronological order, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

Meta says the "Feeds" page will not show suggested posts, but will still have ads. The purpose of the new “Feeds” page is to keep users on the app longer by adding more unique content and more accounts.

Growth in Facebook's user base has stagnated in recent years in the United States and Europe. Meanwhile, TikTok, its rival, has seen significant growth in the number of users and time each person spends on the app in the US.

In addition, TikTok is known as an application with young users. As the threat from TikTok grows, Facebook has been doing everything to attract young people.

Meta executives have been vocal about pushing for "Reels," a feature similar to TikTok's short video feature. And Mr. Zuckerberg has pushed the feature aggressively on both Facebook and Instagram.
